I need a script

There are many websites with scripts for auditions or short scenes for youth groups. Keep the script SHORT, you will need to learn it and act it out.

Scripts have to have appropriate language and themes
teen monologues
Hollywood acting
ten-minute scenes
Scenes for 2

Using a script to create and perform a role {Assessment task}

Drama is all about people and their stories. We are going to work on creating a role.
Choose a script - there are open scripts and books available. You can look for your own but check it's suitability. Put  your script on your blog, your device/phone, copy it onto paper, print it out .You need to LEARN the words – start by reading them aloud 10 times.
Role on the Wall - what do you know about your character? Use the questions below to create a picture of your character. You can "draw" a role on the wall  OR do short answers to the questions Or a combination. Use your imagination.
Who am I? Eg: I am a 14 year old girl, I feel awkward and I wear lots of layers of clothes to cover my freckled skin, even at the beach. I have grown a lot this year and I feel clumsy.. I am shy.
What are my given circumstances {what do I KNOW }?
Eg: This is the first time I have invited to go anywhere with the other girls. I have just started at a new school because my family has shifted to Christchurch.
What are my relationships? Eg: I am at the beach and I hate the beach because it is cold and windy and sand gets in your food. I don't know the other people very well. They are in my class at school.
What is my objective? Why? eg: I want the others to like me because I need friends.

What must I overcome? This is the problem that is stopping you from getting your objective; this is what you need to overcome to reach your goal.
I am shy and I don’t know what to talk about.
What is my action? This is what you do to overcome your obstacle and attempt to reach your goal.
Eg: I smile a lot and try and copy the way the others talk and move so I fit in better.

Political Theatre - Term 1 Week 1 Lesson 2

If you have completed the tasks for "Tuning in The Blue Planet" start a new post [with a heading - Political Theatre] and do this work.
TASK 1: Start a new blog post. Write in your own words what you think political theatre might be. There is a definition below. You may goggle political theatre/street theatre/ agitprop/propaganda but mainly you need to THINK. Talk to someone else  about what you think it could be.
"Political theatre" is a term that has been used to refer to three different things: theatre that comments on political issues, political action or protest that has a theatrical quality to it, and any action by politicians that is intended to make a point rather than accomplish something substantive.

Task 2: What would your message be?
Task 3: Write a Director's Concept for your play - you can do this in pairs but post on both your blogs. Here is a template.

I want people to stop using packaging in their lunch boxes because the packaging ends up being washed into waterways. I would do a scene with a boy eating his lunch on the beach and he leaves his rubbish there. Some seagulls pick it up and carry it out to sea. They drop it in the ocean where a baby seal is going out for the first time. The seal gets tangled in the plastic and is washed up to the beach dieing. The boy finds the dying seal and tries to save it but it is too late. The 2 seagulls would also be narrators.

Task 4: Do a storyboard with captions for your concept. {search- storyboard template and do it on a google doc}
Task 5: If you were performing in the street what props or set would you use? What costumes/masks/make-up would be worn. Do a picture board with captions for your design ideas.Image result for sea costume

The Blue Planet Tuning in Week 1 Term 4 Lesson 1

I am away on Tuesday and Wednesday this week so I want you to do this "tuning in work" for The Blue Planet  project. At the end of Term 3 we worked on a multimedia [music/ sound effects/visual] piece around a Shakespeare quote. You will get a chance to finish this next week, if you wish, or you can incorporate multi-media in your new task.

Task 1: The Ocean World

Task 1: Watch the video clip and identify the Drama elements - the FARTTS {Focus/action/time/tension/space}. Write in full sentences.

Example:
The focus of this film clip is to show that lions live in family groups.
The action shows the male lion hunting for the females and the cubs. The lioness keeps the cubs safe and the cubs play fight, learning hunting skills.
The roles are the  male lion, the females and the cubs. There is also the zebra which is chased, caught and eaten.
The time frame is late summer, an early morning hunt which takes about 40 minutes.
The space [location, setting] is the rocky outcrop where the lions live and an open area where the zebra is chased an caught.
Task 2: Look at the website  kaitiakitangaand talk to 2 other people about what you have read, then write an explanation of why you think we should care about the sea. The explanation can be bullet points/ a paragraph/ a poem or pictures with captions.
Task 3: Find a picture [or use one provided] which comments on mankind's relationship with the environment. and make a list of the ways it could be turned into a Drama performance {-think of the elements - FARTTS}
Task 4:  How sound adds to the impact of a performance. Find 2 [or more] songs/instrumental or sound effects tracks which say something about protecting the environment.

Blog 9 Responding to "Live" performance

Have you ever been to live performance - actors on stage? Yes or No.

This week you watched a Zen Zen Zoe live performance that had been filmed. It was a performance based on Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" which had been designed for touring high schools. Zen Zen Zoe are a physical theatre company. based in Brisbane but they do run workshops here.
http://zenzenzo.com/product/romeo-juliet-55-minutes-dvd/

On you BLOG write a paragraph about what you saw. You can cut and paste my paragraph on Spamalot, which Mrs Beer, Ms Clemence and I went to see on Friday night.

STATE
Spamalot is a funny, chaotic and very silly musical.
EXPLAIN
It is  written by some of the Monty Python comedy team and is a parody of musicals. It is presented very seriously.
EXAMPLE
At an early stage  a couple, The Lady of the Lake and Sir Lancelot, sing a romantic song. The tune is romantic but the words are silly, "this is the song that goes like this/this is the song that goes on too long". In the second act the Lady of the Lake barges on stage and sings a song complaining about why she hasn't had any songs after interval. She wears very leaborate and beautiful costumes but what she says and sings is silly.
MY OPINION
I enjoyed it because it was so pretend serious that it was funny.

Blog 6 - My intentions for my role

You should already have chosen a role and learned your lines.
Today you will rehearse and write your intentions for your role. I have shared a list of words with you which you should use to describe how you use your body to show your character-
GLOSSARY OF DRAMA TECHNIQUES
voice, body, movement and use of space
Here is an example:

Statement of Intention – Role: Bess- “The Highwayman”
I am going to be Bess. I want to show how beautiful and brave she is. She defies the soldiers and sacrifices herself to save her lover. I want the audience to feel my fear and to feel sorry for me as I am faced with an impossible choice.
I stand up straight with my shoulders back and look straight at the audience.  I press my lips together to show I am scared. I struggle against the ropes [imaginary] that tie me up. I use an angry voice and I yell at the soldiers. When I say "I love him" I use a quieter, deeper voice then I whisper "goodbye" as I pull the gun trigger.

Performance assessment

“Making Lunch”

  1. Pairs [or solo] allocated by Mrs Clark
  2. Plan: Making a sandwich or filled roll. Draw a storyboard or flow chart of what will happen.
  3. Pair share - give and receive feedback from another pair
  4. Perform for class/ camera

Blog 4 What is mime?

  • Principles of Effective Mime
  • Find a video with examples of each principle; insert the video and write underneath  one example of each principle,[you can use more than one video].
    eg: In Mr Bean’
1.when he gets his hand caught between the cymbals
2.when he is surprised by hitting a cymbal with his bottom
3.drumming in time to the sound track
    4.when he swings the cat
5.when he picks up the drum sticks

6.when he bumps his head on a drum while crawling underneath
Insert a video clip of a MIME artist and explain how they use the 6 principles.

The Actor Rowan Atkinson uses a lot of these  techniques- have a look at some of this movie.

Why Play Games? Blog 3

Task 1:  Make a list [at least 5] of Drama games and record the skills required. 10 will get a CARR award.{See the slide show} Here is an example.
Game
skills
Tequila
Listening, moving in unison and canon [chorus]; floor pattern, gesture, eye-contact

Task 2: This should be finished for homework by next Tuesday.
Recall or Research a Drama Game activity [not done in class]
Present the game on a google doc which you share with me, ck@hornby.school.nz
  1. Write the title & instructions
  2. Make layout interesting [font, pictures, steps]
  3. What are the skills this game teaches?

Here is an example:

Ship Ahoy!

A classic game - useful to develop listening skills and spatial awareness.
How Do I Play It?
The teacher first explains that we are about to go on a ship and as crew there are lots of jobs that we need to do.
Students start by forming a line (one behind the other) directly in front of the teacher to enter ship.
The teacher then shouts a command and the children have to perform the activity associated with that command and go to various areas of the ‘ship’.
Commands include:
  • Captains coming – salute and stand still for inspection
  • Boom crossing – students duck
  • Scrub the deck – students all scrub the floor
  • Climb the rigging – all pretend to climb up sail
  • Port – go left and load the cannons
  • C:\Users\ck\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\IK43EBLT\MC900250887[1].wmfStarboard – go right and look out
  • Bow - go to the front and all walk the plank
  • Stern - go to the back and all pull in the anchor
To remember where you’re going - 'port' has four letters as has 'left'!
SKILLS
  • Pirate vocabulary
  • Listening
  • Miming
  • Ensemble – moving with a group

Post 2 Using conventions to share whakatauki

Conventions are certain ways of doing things in Drama
Have a go at this set of flashcards to lean some vocabulary

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/drama/exploring/explorative_strategiesrev1.shtml

Today - in PAIRS you are going to use a CONVENTION to share a whakatauki with another pair [pair/share].

In your blog- write down your whakatauki and the convention you used and also the whakatauki and the convention the other pair used.
eg: We illustrated
Nau te rourou naku te rourou
Your basket and my basket
by doing a ROLEPLAY of 2 students sharing their lunches.

Then share some thing about your favourite  Maori Perfomer.
eg:
Rawiri Paratene ONZM (born 1954) is a New Zealand stage and screen actor, director and writer. He is known for his acting roles in Whale Rider (2002) and The Insatiable Moon (2010) Paratene was born in Hokianga, New Zealand in 1954, and is of Nga Puhi descent.
Paratene initially struggled with reading and writing at school, but went on to be the first Maori graduate of the New Zealand Drama School.
As a young student in the 1970s, Paratene was a member of Nga Tamatoa, an activist organisation which fought for Maori rights, land, language and culture. Paratene was President of the Wellington chapter. Today, working in the arts, Paratene aspires to have more Maori stories on film.
